U.S. MARINE FRACTURES SPINE

Diving into shallow Avater at Milford Beach late on Saturday afternoon, a United States Marine suffered a fractured spine and died before being admitted to hosg*tal. The victim was:— Private James Ponder Theus, aged 18: . , Private Theus ran down the beach and dived into the water, and as he floated face downward for some seconds, another Marine realised something was wrong and dragged him from the water. A St. John ambulance already on the North Shore was sent to Milford, reaching the beach about 4.45, and Private Theus was taken to a United States mobile hospital on the city side of the harbour, artificial respiration being applied throughout. Dr. Phil Andrew, of Takapuna, attended him. A United States naval doctor gave evidence at an inquest that Private Theus was dead on arrival at hospital. No external marks of injury were evident on the body, but a post mortem examination ordered by the coroner, Mr. P. K. Hunt, revealed that death- had been due to a fracture of the spine. Mr. Hunt returned a verdict of death from a broken spine at the inquest yesterday.
