DEFENCE OF N.Z.

WORK OF DIVISION

INVALIDED MEN WELCOMED

(PA.) WELLINGTON, this day. Speaking at-a reception to invalided soldiers recently returned from the Middle East, the Minister of Health, Mr. Nordmeyer. said: "Though you have been fighting thousands of miles awav. you have done as much in the defence of New Zealand as if you had been here fighting the Japanese, and the Government and the people of New Zealand are deeply grateful to you. You belong to a division that has become known as one of the finest fighting divisions in the world. It is an accepted fact that it stopped Rommel from getting into Cairo, and the part it has played will go down in history." The Minister also welcomed a number of men who had served in the Merchant Navy. Among the returned soldiers is Sergeant R. M. MacFarlane, M.P., former Mayor of Christchurch.
