AIR RAIDS IN EUROPE

A" graphic description of air-raids over enemy territory was given in a broadcast last evening by WingCommander T. O. Freeman, D.5.0., and D.F.C. and bar, who has returned to New Zealand after nine years in England. He took part in 65 raids over Europe. • He said the Ruhr was the most heavily defended area, and the Krupp works were one of the main objectives of the Royal Air Force. When Essen was attacked eight nights running Wing-Commander Freeman took part in the first and last of the attacks. He described his experiences in raids on Berlin, Lubeck and Turin, and said that all of those cities had suffered severe damage. In raiding Turin an altitude of 14,000 feet had to be reached to clear the Alps. Wing-Commander Freeman added that during his time as a squadron commander- in the Bomber Command he had men from all parts of New Zealand frying with him. and he paid a tribute to the splendid work they did and were doing.
