DUTCHMEN DECORATED

At the end of November last the story appeared in the New Zealand Press of how the Netherlands tanker Ondina, together with the Bengal, sank a heavily armed Japanese raider. It is now reported by Royal Netherlands Naval Headquarters in Australia that Queen Wilhelmina has bestowed the highest Netherlands military decoration, the Military Willems Order, posthumously on Captain W. Horsman, of the Ondina, who died on the bridge during the successful fight of his ship against the Japanese raiders. The Queen also granted other decorations to a number of Dutch, British and Chinese members of the crew, all of whom did their utmost in an uneven fight. Amongst those decorated are mates, engineers, sailors, Chinese quartermasters and the members of the crew of the only, small gun with which the Ondina scored its'great success. The congratulations of Admiral J: Th. Furstner, Minister for the Navy, and Vice-Admiral C. E: L. Helfrich, Commander-in-Chief Netherlands Forces, Far East, accompanied the message to Australia regarding the decorations.
