AUCKLAND XI.'S TASK SET TO SCORE 314 TO WIN (0.C.) WELLINGTON, this day. When Wellington resumed its second innings against Auckland in -the Army cricket match, the last two wickets added no less than 58 runs to the overnight tally. So as the Central Military District wound up with 254, the Northern Command XI was set the substantial task of making 314 to win. In view of Pritchard's sensational bowling on Friday, there appeared at 11.40 (when Wellington's innings closed) no prospect of Auckland even making a draw of the match under the Laws of Cricket. Meantime,, according to P.lunket Shield conditions, Wellington had already won by 59 runs on the first innings whatever happened short of Auckland knocking up 314. Apparently, in order to give the Saturday afternoon public a prospect of seeing some cricket, the starting time to-day was 11 o'clock, an hour later than in the Eden Park match (when Auckland won by six wickets), and the first day's play at Basin Reserve yesterday. Auckland's opening batsmen, Hallday (11) and Postles (32), with the aid bf half a dozen extras, had put on 49 before lunch without loss.
