PARRISH LAD

OTAHUHU HANDICAP

AN EXCITING FINISH

Spectators rose with excitement as the Otahuhu Handicap entered its concluding stages at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting to-day. And there were by no means a few spectators, as the stands were overcrowded. What brought them to their feet was the strong challenge launched in the home stretch by the two favourites, Parshall and Sabu. Parrish Lad was half a length clear half way down, and the others were catching him, but only by inches, as the son of Great Parrish was hanging on grimly. The trio flashed past the judge almost on terms, but Parrish Lad got the verdict by a head from Parshall, Sabu being a nose away. It was a magnificent struggle. Parrish Lad and his driver, M. Paul, deserved great credit for the fine winning run of 3.16 for the mile and a half, but there might easily have been a different result. Parshall was slow in the early stages, and actually second last after travelling three furlongs a couple of lengths behind Sabu, but at the home turn Parshall was second, right up on Parrish Lad's sulky, while Sabu was only eighth, the last-named having been hampered for room crossing the top. It would appear, therefore, that Sabu would have won but for these facts.

The race was full of interest. Isabella Pointer went out fast and made the running from Bronze Queen, Kete Kura and Hillcrest, and at the conclusion of a mile in 2.18 Kete Kura, Parrish Lad and Shadow Son were ahead of the others. Isabella Pointer's driver, Broughton, then slipped the field to establish a lead of seven lengths. Parrish Lad then went fast and made up ground, being followed swiftly by Parshall. Isabella Pointer was beaten at the home turn, and then ensued a battle royal between Parshall and Parrish Lad, with Sabu adding to the excitement in the last 30 yards. Bronze Queen ran a nice race to be fourth, with Kewpies Jewel, True Guide, Hillcrest and Grand Dame following in that order. The Trial Trot Handicap resulted in an exciting finish, the southern representative Safari notching the verdict on the post by a half heaa. from the hot win favourite, Forewarned. At the start Peter Abbey, Prince Volo, and Wharekawa broke up badly and took no further part in the race. Silver Plane went out fast from Etta Girl, followed four lengths behind by. Forewarned and Golden Journey, with the rest a long way back. Forewarned went into the lead with half a mile to go. Safari raced through smartly to jmn issue with her across th'e top with Etta Girl, Golden Journey and Princess Beverley prominent of the others. With 50 yards to go Safari challenged strongly on the outside of Forewarned while Etta Girl tried to get up on the inside. As there was not sufficient room for Etta Girl she came into contact with Forewarned's sulky and broke badls. This incident' possibly cost Forewarned the race. Silver Plane ran on to take third place, and then came Audrey's Last, Etta Girl, and Imperial Jade.

* Southerners Prevail Bel Hamed and Imperial Lady, two southern representatives, fought out a great finish in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes, and victory went to the former, a U Scott filly. All the honours were her's, too, as she cohceded Imperial Lady half a dozen lengths' start from the half mile pole, and it was an astonishingly good performance to get up and gain the verdict. The northerners were clearly outclassed. At the start Bula reared up, swung round, and stayed at the barrier, and Noble de Oro led out from Imperial Lady, Red Horizon and Bon Sorte. Bel Hamed was a fair distance further back, having failed to go off with any dash, while Bay Machine was breaking and giving Smith some bother. Imperial Lady was well clear at the half mile from Noble de Oro, with Bel Hamed making up ground and Bay Machine still mixing his gait. Imperial Lady and Bel Hamed were a dozen lengths clear of Noble de Oro entering the straight, and Bel Hamed sustained a splendid run to record 2.18 for the mile. Bay Machine finished with dash to take third place 14 lengths behind, and then came Noble de Oro and Bon Sorte.

At Odds-On Numba was backed down to almost two to one on to win the Royal Handicap, and although he was responsible for a good performance to pull his backers through, the running of the race made it clear that Josette would have won if she had got out a bit sooner. Although it was a good contest from a spectacular point of view, four horses dominated the position throughout. They were Alcazar, Numba (on the outside of Alcazar), Josette (on the rails) and Stargum. When the field entered the concluding stages Flower Potts and Franco had moved into fifth and sixth positions close handy to the four leaders, but it was apparent that the quartet dominated the position and would fight out the issue. As they entered the home stretch Numba took the measure of Alcazar and Stewart was compelled to pull Josette out and make his run. Numba was dying in Smith's hands in the last 20 yards and Josette just failed by a head to catch him. Alzacar was a length away in third place ahead of Franco, which ran past Flower Potts in the final half-furlong, with Stargum next to finish. Detailed results:— TRIAL HANDICAP of £200.
