AWARDS OF MEDALS

SOUTH ISLAND SOLDIERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON j this day. Advice has been received by the Prime Minister of the following immediate awards, approved by Hie Majesty. The Military Medal Sapper William Alfred Gregory, Kaikoura. Private Peter Richard Blunden, Greymouth. Before enlisting in June, 1940, Sapper Gregory served four years in the Nelson Mounted Rifles. He left New Zealand with an early reinforcement draft and was reported missing in the Western Desert in July, 1942. In October he was reclassified a prisoner of war, but a month later he was reported safe and with his unit. A farmer in civil life, Sapper Gregory is 38 years of age. Private Blunden, who sailed with the Third Echelon, was wounded and reported missing in Greece in June, 1941. He was in hospital in Greece for some months, and later was reported a prisoner of war in a German prison camp, but in October, 1942, advice was received that he was safe in Egypt. Private Blunden is 30 years of age, and at the time of his enlistment was serving as a territorial with the Canterbury cavalry.
