DOCKYARD WORKERS

SUCCESSFUL APPEALS

Appeals by six tradesmen employed in His Majesty's Dockyards against the decision of the district manpower officer granting permission for the termination of their services were allowed by the Manpower (Industrial) Committee yesterday after a hearing had been taken in committee.

Objection was made at the outset by Mr. F. W. Miller, secretary of the Public Service Association, and Mr. A. G. Quartley, appearing for the appellants, to an application by Mr. V. R. Meredith, for the Crown, to have the hearing fully in committee, as they submitted that arguments on the general rights of persons in essential industries could be heai-d publicly, and evidence involving the working of the dockyard taken in committee. The hearing eventually was taken wholly in committee, and the appeals upheld, as the tribunal decided that the evidence submitted was not sufficient to justify termination of ilie men's services. The committee ordered that the amount of salary or wages the appellants would have earned up to and. including February 11, 1943, was to be paid by the emplovers, less any sum received by or due to them by salary or wages from any other source in the period concerned.

When she fell down a flight of stairs at . her home yesterday, Mrs. Emma Foote, aged 74, of 129, Vincent Street, City, suffered concussion and lacerations to the scalp. Mrs. Foote was taken to the/Auckland Hospital. Her condition to-day was satisfactory.
