HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY
"GRAND OLD MAN OF OTAGO" (0.C.) INVERCARGILL, this day. Mr. George H. Romans, of Arrowtown, yesterday celebrated the 100 th anniversary of his birthday. Mr. Romans has taken an active part on all public bodies, and is one of the oldest Freemasons in New Zealand. In 1881 Mr. Romans married Miss Christina Jansen, and they had one son, George Henry Romans, now chief of the Hansard staff in the Federal Parliament, Canberra, Australia. His wife died in 1884. In 1887 he married Miss Mary Elizabeth Travis, a daughter of pioneer settlers of the Arrow district, and they had a family of ten.
Although he has retired from business Mr. Romans is still active, and his hearing, and eyesight is unimpaired.
This Grand Old Man of Central Otago is known everywhere for his sterling character, honesty, tolerance and kindliness.
