PACIFIC ZONE

CONTROL AFTER WAR America Must Have Many Air And Naval Bases Ree. 2 p.m. WASHINGTON, Feb. 9, The Secretary ■ for the Navy, Colonel Knox, testifying before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the United States.must maintain control of the Pacific after the war, retaining a necessary network of air and naval bases to disarm Japan on the sea and keep her disarmed a long time. He considered lease-lend would aid the United States materially in obtaining the desired bases throughout the Pacific. He favoured negotiations for bases beginning without delay, and added: "We are not avid for more territory, but are wise to insist on complete control and sufficient bases to prevent anothe'r war of aggression in the future." Colonel Knox declared that leaselend had been a major factor in stopping the Axis. Lease-lend extension would be a major, perhaps a decisive, factor in our ultimate victory.
