WOMEN'S NIGHT TREK
BORSTAL EVACUATION DURING THREAT OF FIRE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. Because of a fire in the vicinity of the Point Halswell Borstal Institute for Women, in Wellington, it became necessary to evacuate the buildings last night at about 10 p.m. Some 70 women were marshalled scantily clad, each with a blanket for a wrap, and taken towards the beach at Shelly Bav, having to traverse en route a plantation and a sheer cliff. The only light was given by a torch carried by the matron, and three cripples in the party had to be carried. The trip was made without mishap, and the whole operation was marked by cheerfulness and the co-opei"ation of the staff. The party was on the beach for about two hours, when word was received that the fire was extinguished and they were conveyed back to the institution in army lorries.
