WORK FOR GIRLS

IN BUTCHERS' SHCPS i 1 POSITION IN WELLINGTON (0.C.) WELLINGTON, this day. A Legislation Suspension Order has made it possible for girls to be employed in certain work in butchers' shops, but there is no rush. Inquiries made show that no applications have been received so far in Wellington, though there are two in the South Island. Girls have always been employed as cashiers in butchers' shops, but the order now allows females of the age of 21 or over to work at packing display trays, weighing, wrapping and serving to customers any joints, steaks, and smallgoods that have been prepared for sale by male assistants, taking cash, tying (only) prepared rolls of fresh meat, rolling of sausage meat in bread crumbs, and light cleaning, not to include the scrubbing or scraping of butchers' blocks, the cleaning of sausage machinery, or brine tubs. The weekly wages are:—During first three mbnths, £3 5/; during second three months, £3 15/; thereafter, £4 10/. To determine, these rates of pay all periods of employment, in butchers', pork-butchers', butchers' smallgoods, or delicatessen shops are to be taken into account, j The more distasteful portions of the work have been left out for girls. There is plenty of time for them to come forward for this new work, but with the extent to which girls are employed everywhere now, those out of work are.few.
