HOMES FOR MAORIS
—•' ' ' EARLY ACTION SOUGHT Conditions under which a number of Maoris are living in Auckland were discussed yesterday at a meeting between members of the tribal committees and the Mayor, Mr. Allum. The need of a hostel for Maori girls, and a welfare department to supervise Maori life, was pointed out. Lieutenant W. P. Clarke, of the Native Department, said that the leaders were concerned at the present position. A census, not yet completed, showed that there were about 2000 Maoris engaged in essential industries in Auckland. There was need for immediate action. Mr. Allum said he was fully impressed with the urgency of the problem, and would do his utmost to,, arrange a meeting as soon as possible, between the Maori executive committee, the Minister in charge of Native Affairs, Mr. Mason, and the Minister in charge of Maori War Effort, Mr. Paikea.
