DESIGNS SHOWN

FINE ARCHITECTURE

EXHIBITION BY STUDENTS

Combining scientific and artistic skill, the annual exhibition of the Auckland University College School of Architecture, which is to be opened to-morrow, displays some fine work on the part of the students. The exhibition will be opened by the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, and the president of the University College, Mr. W. H. Cocker, and the dean of the Architectural faculty, Professor C. R. Knight, will also speak. Work of the students during the past session, from the first year to the fourth, is on display, and prizewinning designs in various sections are included. Of special interest a»e the designs which won first and

second prizes in the Savage Memorial competition. They were executed by old students of the college, as were the third and fourth prize-winning designs in the Cathedral competition which are also shown. Professor Knight said this morning that these designs were being shown in lieu of the theses from fifth year students working in offices which are usually exhibited. The regulation making architecture a reserve occupation, he said, came into force too late to affect those students who were already in the forces, and consequently they had no theses from them. Professor Knight also said that during the coming summer holidays all students above the first year would be doing work on defence buildings and hospitals, research jobs and so on for the forces. The training of the architects is shown stage by stage, from the first simple designs to the highly complicated working drawings, with their fine mathematical calculations. Some artistic paintings are shown in the recreational work, which students carry out in their holidays. This year, old college students donated a cash prize for the best sketch in memory of the late Mr. A. McLeod Chisholm, senior lecturer in architecture at the college for many years. These winning entries will also be shown to-morrow.
