TRAINS TO RACES
POLICY OF DEPARTMENT
<0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
"What is the policy of the Railways Department regarding running race trains to outside districts?" asked Mr. A. E. Bartrum at a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce.
The District Traffic Manager of Railways (Mr. G. H. McLean) explained that all cheap fares to race meetings had been cancelled. Anyone wishing to go to a race meeting had now to pay the full fare. Some race trains had to be provided otherwise people wanting to go to race meetings would swamp the ordinary services and relief trains would have to be run, so that it all amounted to the same thing. Mr. Bartrum agreed that he did not see how that difficulty could be overcome, but added that it did seem absurd that such trains should be put on.
The president (Mr. C. S. Hammond) commented that racing had been cut down considerably. For the meetings that remained a certain amount of train travel was necessary to avoid travel by car or bus. Mr. Bartrum said he might bring the matter up again later.
