BASEBALL CHAMPIONS

FOUR WINS TO YANKEES' ONE Rec. 12 noon. NEW YORK, Oct. 5. At St. Louis this afternoon, in the fifth match of the world baseball series, St. Louis Cardinals beat New York Yankees 4 2. This victory gave the championship to Cardinals, who had previously won three of the first four games. The winning pitcher to-day was Beazley an<* the loser Ruffing — a "rookie" who created a sensation by beating Cardinals 7—4 in the opening contest at St. Louis on October 1.

At New York Cardinals made it "all square" with a 4—3 success, and became one up at St. Louis by a margin of 2—o. On Sunday at New York Cardinals took a commanding 3—l lead In the series by defeating Yankees 9—6 In a wild, slugging contest in which Yankees used three pitchers and Cardinals four. The winning pitcher was Lager. Cardinals went into a 6—l lead in the fourth innings, scoring four runs and knocking v Brown from the box. Bowerer. Yankees rebounded In the sixth innings and made five runs, tying the score as Charlie Keller homered with two on sending pitcher Mort Cooper to the showers. Cardinals ■cored two runs in the seventh innings when they knocked Atley Donald from the mound. They added their final tally in the ninth innings. Max Lanier held Yankees to a scoreless final three innings, gaining credit for victory. In the big fourth Innings Cardinals delighted a recordbreaking crowd with an exhibition of wild baserunning, for which they are famous, mixing spectacular dashes with six hits and two walks. Stan Muslal came up twice in this innings, hitting a single and double. The Yankee powerhouse opened up In the sixth innings when Rlzzuto. Cullenbine. Keller and Priddy got hits from Cooper, but Cardinals came back for a second time, broke the tie and coasted to victory.
