WILL FIGHT BACK

CHINESE TRAINING

Learning Use Of Modern Weapons From U.S. Officers Rec. 11 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 5. Several thousand Chinese are training near the eastern frontier in preparation for fighting their way back to China, says a Reuter's correspondent from somewhere in eastern India. United States Army officers are instructing the Chinese in the use of the most modern equipment, including the improved 75 mm. howitzers, 50mm. mortars, heavy machine-guns, Bren guns and tommy guns.

One unit escaping from Burma was caught by the monsoon. It was saved by its own endurance plus about 170 tons of food dropped from Allied planes. The last big batch of Chinese troops from Burma arrived as recently as the last fortnight. A hint that Japan is feeling the pinch of her merchant shipping losses is contained in a dispatch from Berlin: "Owing to a temporary shortage of tonnage in Japan's newly acquired territories, it is necessary for Sumatra, Malaya, Borneo and other areas to be largely selfsufficient."

The Berlin news agency says that torrential rains in northern Siam have caused widespread floods. Part of Bangkok is flooded.

KENTUCKY GOING DRY

Rec. 10 a.m. NEW YORK, Oct. 5. Kentucky, the home of the mint julep, is swinging back to prohibition. Sixty-seven of Kentucky's 120 counties have already outlawed the sale of liquor and beer. The dry forces are trying to influence the forthcoming election in six more counties.
