NOT FAVOURED

SUBDIVISION MOVE

PRODUCTION COUNCIL

A request that the Auckland District Council of Primary Production should give consideration to the question of splitting up its area into two separate districts was received from the National Council of Primary Production at a meeting of the district council this morning. It was suggested that the headquarters of the two councils should be at Pukekohe and Helensville respectively. It was considered that, in the event of the council agreeing to the proposal, there should be a separate secretary for each district.

The chairman, Mr. R. C. Clark, said that Mr. M. ,T. Scott, the Dominion supervisor, had brought up the matter, and the speaker had told him that he thought the proposal to be neither desirable nor necessary. The fact that the council was a big one was a factor making for strength, in as much as it represented a fairly wide section of the farming community. He believed that the members could work better as a strong council than as two lesser councils.

The secretary. Mr. W. Alexander, reported that the decision of the executive committee was that it did not favour the subdivision of the area.

Mr. H. O. Mellsop said that the executive committee also agreed that, if there was to be a division, the headquarters of the northern area should be at Auckland and not at Helensville.

Mr. M. McDougall said the reason for the proposal was that in the Pukekohe district there was a great number of small holdings, and, with the urge for production in regard to vegetables, it was considered that there should he more representation on the council of those growing vegetables.

Mr. J. Mackic said he did not favour the proposal. He feared that parochialism would creep in if it was put into effect.

The matter was left in abeyance until Mr. Scott could he present at a meeting of the council.
