GIRL GUIDES YEAR OF SERVICE fixe war effort This terrible war has made one thing outstandingly clear, and that is, the great part youth is plaving and will continue to play in the world's future," said Mrs. Alan Donald, provincial president, at the annual meeting of the Girl Guides' Association of the Auckland province. ''Never was there a time," she continued, "that 'ri° Guides were needed more. Their past training and experience has made them pioneers of this great urge of youth, and I feel sure that in these coming years we shall go forward to even greater responsibilities and service." The annual report, presented by Mrs. J. A. Watson, provincial commissioner. disclosed that a considerable amount of war work had been done during the past year, both locally and in National Service. Auckland province made over 800 camouflage nets. In the Hut Fund £760 had been collected. Country companies had collected ergot, rose-hips and seaweed. Clothing and comforts for children in the bombed areas of Britain and for men of the merchant service had been sent to Dominion headquarters.

Special mention was made at the meeting of tlte rat: drive which the Ktntles were holding at the present time. It. was emphasised that materials required were for cleaning purposes, such as waste cotton material, old underclothing, any suitable old clothes, linens or furnishings of a suitable material. .

NURSING CORPS

SATISFACTORY RESPONSE

The establishment of a corps of 00 women as Auckland Hospital auxiliary nurses was expected to be successful, said the chairman of the Hospital Board, Mr. Allan J. Moody, yesterday. A satisfactory number of applications had been received in the past two days.

When asked whether the remuneration offered—£2 4/S a week and live out—was sufficiently attractive. Mr. Moody said it was realised that it would not pay the average working girl or woman to leave other employment on these terms.

Since only GO women were required, however, it was believed that a sufficient number would come forward, knowing that they were assisting the war effort.

BIBLE IN SCHOOLS

The women's committee of the Bible in Schools recently held a successful "at home" at the Farmers' Trading Co. board room. Mrs. Cranston presided. The Rev. Blamires, of Wellington, was the speaker, and gave-an account of the work done during the year. At the conclusion of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker and artists.
