HOME GUARD
APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE EMPLOYERS' DIFFICULTIES For three hours last night the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board sat hearing appeals against service in the Home Guard. In many instances employers who appealed on behalf of workers stressed the great difficulties encountered in meeting their industrial obligations, caused mainly by reason of the fact that large numbers of their staffs were already in the armed forces. The nature of the reservists' duties and the long hours of work made Home Guard service impracticable. It was shown to the satisfaction of the board in numerous cases that reservists were employed on shift work and could not attend Home Guard parades either at week-ends or week nights. In more than one case it was shown that men were working from 50 to (iO hours per week. One had worked 90 hours in one week. The majority of the appeals were adjourned sine die. a fewwere withdrawn and three dismissed.
