FIRM BESIEGED
FOR SEED SUPPLIES SUITABLE FOR EATING Reminiscent of the food queues so familiar to those in Kngland during the last war, a crowd estimated at between 200 and 300 people assembled outside a leading Auckland seed firm this morning. Thev were waiting to buy seed potatoes, which the firm had been fortunate enough to secure from the South. Supplies were first distributed on Tuesday for a limited period in 2Slb and 1 lib parcels; a further quantity was sold yesterday, and the remaining 141b bags were disposed of today. The main attraction was that the potatoes were large and quite suitable for the table. On Tuesday word got around the city that potatoes fit for eating were available at certain times from the seed merchant's, and the result was a long queue stretching from the shop entrance around the corner into an adjacent street. The potatoes were sold for -Id per lb. compared with ad, which is the fixed price for new potatoes at the city markets.
