EMPIRE CHAMPION'S DEATH
Rec. 12 noon. CAPETOWN, Sept. 28. Ben Foord, former British Empire heavyweight boxing champion, was found shot dead in his home at Auckland Park. Johannesburg, where he was visiting his wife on week-end leave.
Foord won the British Empire title from Jack Petersen In the third round at Leicester on August 17. 1936. He lost then to Tommy Farr on March 15. 1937. on points. Ben was knocked out in the ninth round of a scheduled 15-rounds elimination at Harringay arena on June 21, 1938, when Eddie Phillips qualified to meet Farr, against whom Phillips already held three decisions.
Foord soon after (October 8. 1938) sailed with his wife for South Africa. His manager. Louis Walsh, who had taken him to England and developed him into a champion, said Foord hoped to start a boot factory. One thing was certain: "Ben will not do any more fighting."
