RAILWAY SLIP
MAIN TRUNK DELAY
EXPRESS ARRIVES LATE
The Main Trunk express which left Wellington for Auckland yesterday afternoon did not arrive until 11.21 this morning, almost four hours and a half later than usual time of arrival. This was due to serious slip dangers between Taihape and Mataroa, which have caused the Main Trunk line to be closed to all through traffic for three days pending repairs which are being carried out by the maintenance branch.
The trouble enveloped between two tunnels on the Mataroa hank, a long climb north of Taihape, and when an inspection was made yesterday morning it was seen that as a result of heavy rains last week there was a possibility of a high face falling on to the permanent way. Instructions to suspend all traffic between Taihape and Mataroa were issued by the engineers of the Railway Department yesterday. Until the track is normal all express trains between Wellington and Auckland are being run via the Stratford-Okahukura line. The additional mileage involved means an extra travelling time of approximately three hours and a half. The Auckland-Wellington express was expected to arrive about ten o'clock this morning.
