Vichy Claims Stubborn Defence On Madagascar

Rec. 1.30 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 28 nia\ C e° rd thf 1° 3 Vichy the French positions in Madagascar are being stubbornly defended. The British have launched? several attacks 40 miles south of Antananarivo. 1
The Vichy radio says that Petain nas sent the following message to the people of Madagascar through' the Governor, M. Annet: "Britain may occupy Madagascar, but she wi l not overcome the obstacle which holds out against machine-guns and cannon—your determined will to remain French."
British forces in Madagascar, after heavy artillery fire, attacked the French positions 25 miles from Antananarivo, .says the Vichy radio. The French troops, after several hours' resistance, repulsed the British.
