CARGO PILLAGING
Losses Expected To Total Many Thousands Of Pounds
RACKET IX AUSTRALIA Special Australian Correspondent Rec. 2 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. Cargo pillaging at the wharves in Australian ports has become so serious that efforts are being made ,by shipping companies and importers to have more severe penalties imposed on offenders. It is also desired that police be given increased facilities to search persons suspected of pillaging. Shipping companies at Sydney say that they expect their losses will total hundreds of thousands of pounds this year through cargo pillaging on the waterfront. Pillaging is believed now to be the biggest criminal racket in Sydney. Statistics kept by the shipping companies show that the average cost per ton of cargo for pillage claims has risen from 2.26 pence in 1938 to slightly more than 1/ on goods which come under the rationing system. Those are most keenly sought by pillagers.
