RUBBISH COLLECTION

HEAVY WELLINGTON MILEAGE (0.C.) WELLINGTON, this day. Rubbish collected in Wellington has increased from 18,000 tons gross in 1932-33 to more than 29,000 tons during the twelve months ended March 31, 1942. During the last ten years, 255,828 tons of refuse has been collected and disposed of. The present collection averages something over 550 tons a week, requiring 15 motor vehicles and four carts to maintain the service.

This means a heavy mileage during the course of a year, and the position is to be investigated, a suggestion having been made that under waftime conditions suburban residents could take steps to dispose of household refuse themselves.

The quantity of refuse being collected in Wellington has been steadily increasing despite the reducing factor during recent months of scrap metal salvage and the minimising or elimination of paper wastage. The past year's total refuse disposal of 29,000 tons includes 1760 tons of ashes from material taken to the destructor and then spread out on the tip. Rubbish collection from householders in the city accounted for 20,500 tons of the past year's total.
