HIGHLIGHTS OF SATURDAY'S SOCCER

FLYERS CONQUER SAILORS

Centre-half Everson played a sterling game for the Air Force (3) against the Navy (2) in the main Soccer attraction at headquarters. His tackling was clean and effective, whilst his distribution of the ball was always accurate. Everson was ably supported by Morris on the right wing and Baker (left). Lattimer was again in good form at right back, whilst his partner, Peebles, also did well. Patterson and Waters made a fine left wing, the former scoring two goals and Waters netting the other. Patterson is a great opportunist and a deadly shot. Hopkinson, who received a nasty kick early in the game, worked hard, and the front line was completed by Williams and Phelps, who combined well on the right wing. / A Popular Player.—One of the best known and most popular Soccer players in Auckland for the last ten years, "Lofty" Lund, turned out at centre-half for the Navy in the Munro Service Cup tie against Air Force. "Lofty" was a tower of strength to hia side, and broke up numerous attacks by the clever Airman vanguard. His tackling and kicking were keen and well placed, and Lund stood up to the pace at which the game was played in good fashion. Batty again brought off some brilliant saves In gdel. Logan, at left-back, was a great worker, and never let up until the final whistle. Vannam obtained both Navy goals, but the Navy vanguard lacked combination—probably due to little chance of practice. Shore Gets a Shock. —Mount Albert Grammar A surprised the undefeated North Shore XI when it gained a seven goals to one victory in the senior championship match, which was the curtainraiser at Blandford Park. Two ex-Shore players, Simp (3) and C. Ekman (2) scored five of the seven points, whilst Speed and Wilkinson were responsible for the other two points. Ces. Ward had a large say in his side's victory—.he played a sterling name at centre-half. Woodhall (J.) J>nti j Hutchinson were also in excellent form, and ?ave the Shore vanguard little qtaance to gel icoing. Speed and R. Woodhall were a safe pair of backs, whilst the Old Boys' front line was a good one with Wilkinson. Ekman and Jones combining splendidly and feeding their wings in ".?• «ty!e. Shore gave a sorry exhibition after its recent brilliant forn Nettleton and Richards showed occasional glimpse form, but Craxton, Haycock and Kessell were tl e most consistent players. Craxton (a former Ne* Zealand rep.) again making some excellent saves between the posts. Gurr scored Shores goal from a penalty. C.R.O. Wins Easily.—Ponsonby could fielu ten men lor their game with C.R.0., and t. soldiers had no trouble in winning the match by nine—nil. The soldiers' defence was too strong for Ponsonby front line, Roberts and Taylor being outstanding in this department of the game. The C.R.O. forward line was well served by Masters, Ralph and Cliff, all of whom were in the goals. Gavan was a tower of strength in the Ponsonby goal, and brought off several good saves. Cashin. Gardiner and Meek got through a lot of solid defensive work with credit for Ponsonby. The forward line, however, was very weak, Kane being the only one to show form. Suburbs Nearly Double Figures.—Metro-College was unlucky at St. Heller's Bay on Saturday in not bringing ont or two determined raids on Eastern Suburbs to a successful conclusion. On the other hand, it might be said that there is little luck in football, and that the disparity in the scoring on Saturday was due to Metro-College s lack of finish. In the first half play was of a fairly even nature (Suburbs 3—l). and sparkling xootball was produced on both sides. In the second spell Metro-College made desperate attempts to even up accounts, but Eastern Suburbs, who saw to it that Hope-Ede in particular did not get too much of the ball, ran away with the game, and indulged in an orgy of scoring, winning the match by nine goals to one.

In the other senior game Comrades beat Mount Albert B 5—2 at Fowlds Park.
