GETTING UPPER HAND
GOATS ON MOUNT EGMONT PLAYGROUND NEAR HOSTEL (0.C.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. "Under present conditions the goats in Egmont National Park are definitely getting the upper hand and destroying the bush," stated Mr. W. Gibson, when he and Mr. J. Stachurski were elected to represent the Inglewood County Council on the park board. When Mr. Grigg suggested that parties of men should be taken up periodically by the ranger to help keep the goats under control, Mr. Gibson said that that had been done in the past but now the honorary ranger had not time to take part in that sort of thing. The goats were now right round the mountain, added Mr. Gibson, and since the North Egmont hostel had been closed they had made a playground in front of the hostel. In reply to a question as to whether goat skins were of marketable value, Mr. Gibson said it was not worth while to go down into the valleys and skin them. There would also be the difficulty of getting them out of the bush.
