"CLEANING UP CAMPAIGN"
DEATH SENTENCES IN JAVA
MELBOURNE May 25
Radio Batavia (Java-N.E.1.) has announced that the Japanese have passed sentence of death on two Indoesians in Java, both native policemen, for spreading false rumours.
About a week ago two Dutchmen in Bandoeng (Java) were sentenced to death by the Japanese for listening to foreign broadcasts and spreading rumours about the news they received in this way, while later reports mentioned the arrest of 500 Europeans in the "cleaping-up 'campaign of anti-Japanese elements and the arrest of a number of Chinese for raising money for the Kuomintang. Now Indonesians also have become victims at the hands of Japanese murderei's. Obviouslv these policemen preferred the "former Nether--1 nds Government above the blessing <;i the Japanese liberators. It is also reported that in Pamarang (Java) native policemen opposed the Japanese sojdiers. It is not knnun whether this resulted in more death sentences. 11
