ALBERT PARK WORK

TUXXEL SHELTERS PROGRESS Satisfaction with the progress being made with the construction of the shelter tunnels under Albert Park was expressed this morning bv the Mayor and Chief Warden, Mr. J. A. C. Allum. He said that it was a very big job, but they would not have to wait for the shelters until the work was completed, as portions of the scheme could be used when needed. Gangs of men are working continuously on the main and subsidiarv drives now being made from points round the edge of the park. The scheme includes a system of crosstunnels to safeguard the position should any exit be blocked during an emergency. Because only a limited -number of men can work on any one face, work is being done on some tunnels from both ends, also from the middle, this being possible by the sinking of shafts on the line that the tunnels will take.

In the early stage of driving under the park a good deal of loose volcanic rock was met with, but as progress was made the work was largely centred on a hard sandstone.
