BARNARDO'S HOMES
DISPLAY OF CLOTHING CARING FOR WAR VICTIMS Since the war Dr. Barnardo's Homes in Britain have provided shelter for nearly 2000 children who have been the victims of war circumstances. They have also cared for adult refugees, and all this extra burden has been placed on top of their normal work for homeless children. Consequently the homes ar«. in constant need of clothing and money to carry on their task. A valuable and generous contribution towards these 8250 children— the largest family in the world—was displayed at the home of Mrs. E. A. Leighton, 33, Seaview Road, Remuera, yesterday, when a beautiful array of clothing and toys for the homes was viewed by interested friends. The walls of a large room were hung with coats, suits, frocks and quilts, while tables were loaded with clothing from many parts of New Zealand. A ping-pong table was covered with beautiful new clothing, toys and slippers.from Christchurch alone, as was also one wall. There were piles of articles made by the Wednesday sewing circle from old clothing sent in for that purpose. An original letter written by Dr. Barnardo to a little girl 51 years ago was read, also an article about Mrs. Barnardo, who at the age of 98 is still active in the work of the homes. Money for the fund was collected by means of a guessing competition held in connection with a tray presented by Mrs. B. A. Billington, of Remuera.
To enable Dr. Barnardo's Homes to carry on their very valuable work, donations of money and contributions of clothing, both for adults and children are gratefully accepted by Mrs. Leighton and her group, and helpers are also welcomed.
