MENINGITIS CASE
ORAKEI MAORI CHILD CITY COUNCIL COXCEX Another case of cerebro-spinal meningitis has been reported in Auckland, a Maori child living at the native settlement at Orakei. The Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, said this morning that council officials were investigating the sanitary conditions at the Orakei settlement, and also a report that the mother of the child was living in a tent. Mr. Allum added that for years the City Council had been urging the Government to take action to improve the living conditions at the settlement. Recently representations had been made to the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, and there had been confercnccs with the representative of the native race on the Executive Council, Mr. Paikea. The matter was now more or less in his hands.
Mr. Allum said that the question of the living conditions at Orakei settlement was a matter for Government action, as the council had done everything possible.
