TREASURE SAVED
FROM PHILIPPINES
Enemy Unaware Of Secret
Operation
United Press Association.'—Copyright. Rec. 1.30 WASHINGTON, May 15
The navy has revealed that tons upon tons of gold, silver and numerous securities were removed from the Philippines by a submarine, which carried ammunition last February to Corregidor. The navy said the strongly-fortified enemv positions nearby constituted a constant threat to the crew's safety and to the success of its task, but the job was accomplished with such secrecy and caution that the Japanese at no time were aroused during the two nights required to load the submarine.
Lieut.-Commander Frank Tenno and also the officers and seamen were subsequently decorated. The navy praised the devotion to duty displayed by Mr. Francis B. Sayre, United States Commissioner in the Philippines, and his staff, the army and navy personnel, and the Filipinos who spent days gathering the valuables and taking them to Corregidor under constant bombing and shelling.
