LAST OF A U-BOAT

SUNK BY U.S. DESTROYER

Rec. 12.30 p.m. NEW YORK, May 6. Naval headquarters to-day revealed how an aged four-funnel United States destroyer surprised a German submarine off the Atlantic Coast and sank her with a 4-inch gun, taking prisoner several of the crew. The U-boat was charging her batteries on the surface and members of the crew leaped overboard when the destroyer's gun fired.

The U-boat fired two torpedoes but both missed. Then a 4-inch shell struck the submarine at point blank range and a huge hole was torn in the side. When the shell exploded with terrific violence the U-boat rolled over and sank. *

Known as /'four-stackers,** this type of American destroyer dates back to the Great War. In some grpups there are as many as 41 ships.
