WISE COUNSEL WINS

AUSTRALIAN CUP MELBOURNE, March 8. Rare gameness was displayed by Wise Counsel in winning the Australian Cup, the principal event on the concluding day of the Victoria Racing Club's autumn meeting at Flemington yesterday, and he withstood all challenges in the straight after making a share of the pace. Clever riding by W. Beresford also contributed to the victory. The C. M. Lloyd Stakes was a farcical affair. Tranquil Star led always, her rider, D. Munro, outgeneralling the other riders, who found they had an impossible gap to bridge when they set out after the leader. 1 High Road and Beaulivre finished gamely, but had no chance with the winner. Skipton and Mildura ran poorly. The weather was fine and there was a large attendance. Results:— LEONARD STAKES, one mile.—First division: ROSMARINE, 8.1 (A. Breasley). 1; BANGALLO, 8.7 (R.
