RUSSIAN FASHIONS
WHAT WOMEN WEAR
Charlotte Haldane, wife of Professor J. B. S. Haldane, has brought back some fashion notes from her visit to Kuibyshev, says our London correspondent. The women in the Russian city wear fur hats if they are rich ?nough to have them, she says. The rest of them tie fringed white wool shawls over their heads.
There is no silk hosiery, but lisle thread stockings are worn under felt valenki (knee-high jackboots) which cut your calves in walking until you get used to them. There is plenty of lipstick, face powder and nail varnish, and women polish their nails mostly bright red.
Kuibyshev is a large town on the north bank of the Volga, with some fine buildings, wide avenues and lovely views over forests of fir and birch. The building of factories and the migration of workers and now the added diplomatic activity of the place have more than, doubled the population of 200,000 given as the figure for the 1935 census.
