KARAPIRO-TAUPO WATER SCHEME

Mr. C. R. Beavin's letter is constructive for he shows "how Auckland is overburdened bv a multiplicity of small local bodies, which divide and separate corporate contr f ° l " Water supply is an example ■ of this. As population grows another bore is put down or another creek dammed. If this is continued the people deserve all that is coming to them. Even users of the city supply are told to exercise care, which in a dry season, means chaos to gardens, amounting in the aggregate to a loss of thousands upon thousands of pounds' worth of vegetables—this, too. in a time of scarcitv and high prices. Glasgow, from Lake Katrine with an area of 10 miles long and two miles wide, draws 50,000.000 gallons daily, and gives the people an allowance of 60 gallons each dav. \\ hat could be done with a lake with the square mileage and depth of Taupo, which would forever go on serving a populous area at the lowest possible cost? There is no better scheme in New Zealand, and from a health point of view and from a productive standpoint the benefits would be incalculable. The scheme demands consideration, but most of all action. w. K. HOWITT.
