PARTIAL RETIREMENT
N.S.W. TEMPERANCE CHAMPION (0.C.) SYDNEY, February 18 Archdeacon R. B. S. Hammond, well known in New Zealand for his temperance activities, at 72, is at last taking a holiday and may give up all his activities except his rectorship of St. Barnabas' Church in the city. A few days ago when he resigned the presidency of the Australian Temperance Council, which he had held since its inception members presented him with a cheque for £540. They also gave Archdeacon Mowll a life-sized bust of Archdeacon Hammond and asked that it be given a prominent place in St. Andrew's Cathedral.
Archdeacon Hammond has a famous album containing the signatures of more than 100.000 people who have taken the pledge. It is stated that although his life's work was directed against their commercial interests, hotel keepers, on refurnishing their premises, used to send the archdeacon their old furniture for Hammondville—the hardtimes town which he established during the depression. In his campaigns Archdeacon Hammond coined many a catching slogan such as: Better be neat and tidy than tight and needy." "Gin and bitters lead to sin and jitters."
