STOWED AWAY
THEATRICAL ARTIST
Edward Henry Dudley Bennett, aged 31, a theatrical artist, who was put ashore near Tirl Tiri Island from an overseas ship on which he had left Auckland, appeared before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Police Court, on charges of stowing away on the vessel and leaving New Zealand without a permit. He pleaded guilty to the first charge but not guilty to the second. On his behalf, Mr. Fraer said Bennett did not intend to leave Auckland when he first went on the ship. Bennett's wife was in Honolulu and he was worried about her, having sent three cables without receiving a reply. It was not the ordinary case of stowing away, added counsel.
Bennett was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on the second charge and was convicted and discharged on the first.
