FINE WORK
SEWING CIRCLE HOSPITAL AUXILIARY DISPLAY A wonderful display of work was held by the sewing circle of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary at . the Mission House, Grey's Avenue, this morning. Mrs. A. D. Campbell, president of the auxiliary, and Mrs. M. Carr-Smith, convener of the sewing circle, welcomed members and friends, and the guest of honour, the Mayoress, Mrs. J. A. C. Allum. Mrs. Allum spoke warmly of the fine work the sewing Circle was doing, both for local needs and for the bombed areas in Britain. Mrs. A. D. Campbell also expressed her gratitude to the members. The garments were arranged on tables. One was devoted to those which had been made for the people in the bombed areas of Britain. They comprised 132 garments, including frocks, woollens and complete baby outfits. All were new clothes. Gifts for St. Helens Hospital were i displayed on another table. There were 14 outfits for babies, and 80 garments altogether, and all were beautifully embroidered. Garments of all kinds were seen in the. section devoted to the hospital depot. Gay print frocks for little girls, all. different and attractively made, women s frocks, boys' trousers, and children's bed jackets were among them. There were 410 of these, most of them being new, though some were made out of old clothes. Great ingenuity was shown in the way tiny ■ scraps of material had been joined to produce a garment. Of special interest was the contribution of Miss H. Bassett, who does not belong to the auxiliary, but is interested in its work. A number of soft toys she had made were on display, and also some beautiful warm children's coats. As Miss Bassett works in a factory all day it was felt that her effort was especially good.
The sewing circle is closing down until March.
