AT RICCARTON

Gladynev made up for his ill-fortune in the New Zealand Cup when he put in a characteristic late dash that enabled him to catch Rakanui on the post in the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, thus giving the trainer, B. Burgess, the two principal handicaps at the meeting. Gladynev was within striking distance all the way, and he came home in great style under his solid weight of 9.6. Rakanui again attempted an all-the-way win and just failed. He was one of the "hard luck" £?r, ses , a L the meeting. Blue Border did , e others . coming on when he got a clear run in the straight. Yogi was prominent, but lost ground racing round the home turn. He challenged on the outside in the final furlong, but the effort was short-lived. The Raker and 7 X e ,? ch^ aw . co 'lapsed in the run home, while The Monarch faded earlier. Wardress ran poorly, failing to come on, while Piastre and Iceland Star were never prominent. Hostile Reception Treasurer, a failure earlier at the meeting, returned to winning form in the Cressy Handicap, driving through on the rails soon after passing the false rail and holding on well. His success met with a hostile reception from a small section of the crowd. Haughty Winner again came fast from well back and beat the others easily enough. Military Maid made a fair showing for third place, but she may have to pay a stiff penalty. King's Toast came on for fourth after being back with Haughty Winner to the straight. Siglow never looked likely, while Cymric, Craiglea and Lord Nuffield did not stay. Wild Talk had a chance, but could not come on. Dominate a Game Colt

Dominate completed a double among the two-year-olds in the Pioneer Handicap, proving himself a game cold by finishing on solidly under a big weight. He is the best of the youngsters seen out south of Auckland this season. Prince Leighon battled on and was only caught in the last 30 yards after making all the pace. Retriever also battled on for third and will improve. Indian Sign (bracketed with the winner) looked like taking a place with 60 yards to go, but then gave ground.

Out of Hacks The Joker-"was one of the most consistent horses' at the meeting. He ran his way successfully out of hack class in the Hagley Handicap, this being his second victory at the meeting. He was prominent behind the leaders to the straight and worked forwards on the rails, winning well. Foxtette was prominent turning for home, but could not catch The Joker. Muffler started slowly and then finished on for third. Gunyaih weakened to fourth, while Moderate also failed to run on. A Big Dividend Pay Roll brought the meeting to a close with a surprise win in the Members' Handicap. The Croupier filly took the lead early and was never afterwards seriously challenged. Duncannon, like Pay Roll, is trained by T. R. George, and after working into second place - before the straight he held that position to the finish. Eulogist came on foe third, holding off Not Out by half a length. Rakahanga and Enrich did not stay, while Lelghnor nearly dropped his rider at the start.
