ERNDALE WINS

TE RAPA SUCCESS

WILDORE SECOND 1

STAKES TO KENTISH 7

The opening of the second days racing of the Waikato Raring Club's meeting at Te Rapa to-day was marred by a sensational accident—fully reported In another column—when >o\ oral horses fell and one rider, R. \V. MvTavish, was killed instantly.

The weather was fine, but the track cutting out. There was a fair attendance. Marinoto was made an each-way favourite for the Frankton Handicap in consequence of his good form on Saturday, when he ran a good third in the second division of the Trial Plate after losing several lengths through running wide at the home turn. To-day he took up a prominent position at the home turn and was racing just in behind Royal Melodv and Lady Pay into the straight. Golden Valley was going nicely in fourth position. but then fell, several other horses coming down over him. Lady Pay and Royal Melody were fighting out the issue at ~ the half-distance, where Marinoto came strongly on the outside to quickly put the issue beyond doubt, winning by a lensth and a quarter from Lady Pay with Roy; 1 Melody a length further back! Dublin Show and 5-nake Gully, both of whom were intcrfe-ed with and lost ground, ran on to finish fourth and fifth respectively. Very Glad Easily Taking the lead from Captain Bell and "VYharemanea with three furlongs to go. Very Glad had a decisive win in the Matangi Hurdles. He drew right away in the straight to beat Wharemanea by seven lengths. Tidewaiter. who was third, was another three lengths away. Besiege and Wharemanea led at varying stages in the first ten furlongs, but Besiepe hit hard at the hurdle five furlongs and a half from home and dislodged his rider. Wharemanea and Captain Bell then carried on in front, but it was apparent approaching the half mile that Very Glad could run to that pair at his rider's will. Once lie took charge. Very Glad gave nothing a chance. Tidewaiter was ahvavs racing a long way from the leaders. 'He finished strongly to cut Captain Bell out of third place, but was never a possibilitv. Gay Opal lost her jockey when she stumbled at the hurdle in front of the stand.

Kentish, who had raced only once previously, beat a warm favourite in Indian Princess in the Ruakura Stakes. Kentish a Solicitor-General gelding. won bv two lengths and a half, but Indian Princess was unlucky. Although drawn well. Indian Princess appeared to be crowded soon after the start and at the end of two furlongs was back in eighth place. In the meantime Tudor Rose, Sea Mist, Kentish and Bright Gesture carried on the running. Kentish followed Sea Mist into the straight, but quickly got the upper hand and shpt away with a handy lead. A furlong from home Indian Princess emerged from the ruck with a sharp run, but although she made up considerable leeway never really threatened Kentish. Bright Gesture, who was 'well placed throughout, was a fairly good third, and Sea Mist. Old Pal, Plato Tan and Ballyneety did best of the others. A Comfortable Win Erndale scored a comfortable victoiy in the Hamilton Handicap, in which he beat Wildore by two lengths and a half Aurora's Star was a head away third, with Bronze Moth a close fourth. Erndale, whose recent form had been most consistent, had the run of the race. He was never further back than fourth and advanced so quickly at the home turn that he was hailed as the probable winner even at that stage. Bronze Moth, who set a solid pace in front, led Erndale into the straight, but the latter soon dashed to the front and had the race at his mercy a furlong from home. Wildore. who was fifth into the straight, made a determined effort in the closing stages, but was no match for Erndale. Aurora's Star, who looked a_-r>ossibi!ity before the home turn was reached, was a close third, with Bronze Moth inches ;nvav fourth. Bronze Moth found the mile and a quarter a trifle far.
