LEAGUE FOOTBALL

Honours To Manukau And i Mf. Albert In Final Games „ianukau Easily.—The playing o. the champion of champions match at Carlaw Park 011 Saturday marked the close 1 of the Auckland League season. The competing teams were Manukau and Xorth ' Shore, and the former, showing pood 1 team play, won by 30 points to 10, after j Shore had led 10 —9 at the interval. Il I was the play of the Shore forwards whicli | enabled Shore to hold its own in the first ' spell, but afterwards the Manukau backs • dominated the game and points came con- ' sistently. In the Phelan Shield final Mount j Albert beat Richmond by 8 points to 7. | moss Jones Reappears.—Prominen. in the North Shore forwards waj Ross Jones, who made his first appearance this season. Tall and over 15 stone in weight, he was chosen to go to England with the New Zealand League team in the 1939 season. On his return he went back to his farm in the Matakana district, where his work has given him few opportunities to play football. He showed splendid form on Saturday, packing hard in the last-man-down position, and being a fine leader in the loose play. Hemi in Form.—With bis goals and two tries, J. Hemi got 18 points for Manukau. With 172 points for goals, Hemi has established a new record this season, fhe previous best goal points' record being 156 by W. J. Davidson in the 1921 season. Both of Hemi's tries on Saturday were the result of elusive running which tied the Shore defence in a knot. His first fiveeighth play has been a feature of the League season. Hemi needs room to work in, but on the move his changes of pace and direction make him very difficult to stop. Cowley Brilliant.—One of the best features of the match between Mt. Albert and Richmond was the brilliance of C. Cowley, the Mr. Albert centre, in attack. Although Clements, the Mt. Albert half, opened out his attack with rapid and well-delivered fast parsing, the inside backs did not give Cowley the best of chances, but when he did get possession and the opportunity his speed was evident. He got a very spectacular try after a run from half-way. Petersen's New Role. — Playing at centre-threequarter for Xorfh Shore. C. S. Petersen got two, tries, bo till as the result of backing up' in attacking play, and on one occasion being sure—handed enough to gather a very difficult pafe. Petersen has played this season in tSie 'back of the Shore pack, and his open play stamped him as the best man in the position in Auckland.
