OFFICER DEAD
FIVE INJURED ARMY TRUCK CRASH MIDNIGHT TRAGEDY P (P A.) PALMERSTON N., this day. One man was killed and two women and three other men were injured when an Army truck left the road on the Ashhurst-Pohangina highway at 12.30 a.m. to-day. Casualties were:— Killed Captain Robert Scott Beveridge, stationed at Wellington, whose home is also in Wellington. He is a member of the Temporary Staff. Injured Miss Mary Magee and Mrs. Alice Smith, waitresses, of Palmerston North, both seriously hurt. Lieutenant Donald Wakefield, Foxton Camp, seriously hurt. Sergeant Edward Coates, Showgrounds Camp, injuries not serious. .Gilbert Hope, Palmerston North, condition not serious. The truck was driven by Sergeant Coates. When it was proceeding along the main highway it left the road and turned upside down in a waterway 10ft deep.
