BAPTIST UNION

MORAL ISSUES DISCUSSED RESOLUTIONS ADOPTED Resolutions on moral issues were passed by the Assembly of the Baptist Union of New Zealand at the Baptist Tabernacle. A motion was passed protesting against the liquor traffic as at present conducted in New Zealand and recommended the Government to reduce substantially the import, manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquor as a war-time measure of economy and moral safeguard, to reduce consi4erably the alcoholic content of all wines, beers and spirituous liquors, to review the licensing laws with a view to eliminating anomalies and to enforce such laws more strictly. The Assembly protested against the "present orgy of gambling in this time of grave national crisis," and made a demand on the Government for the abolition of art unions and lotteries, including those promoted for social and patriotic purposes, the drastic reduction in the number of race days and the full enforcement of the law concerning the elimination of the bookmaker.

Attention was called to the failure of the Government to implement the findings of the McMillan Report of 1916 regarding abortion, and prompt action was urged in restricting the sale of contraceptives and aoortifacients.
