CONTROL OF TRAFFIC

SCHOOLBOY PATROLS OTAHUHU OPPOSITION The suggestion that steps were to be taken by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Semple, to introduce legislation to empower schoolboys to control traffic in the vicinity of schools at stipulated hours, was again discussed at a meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council last night. Some weeks ago councillors expressed opposition to the suggestion, and the council wrote a request to the Minister for confirmation of the scheme. In reply Mr. R. Semple wrote outlining details of proposals to be embodied in regulations whereby drivers of vehicles would have to comply with signals from schoolboy traffic patrols. School traffic control, said Mr. Semple, had been in operation in different forms for many years. The new proposals were fully outlined in a circular forwarded to the council. Councillors again spoke in opposition to vesting control in schoolboys, but it was agreed to await receipt of the circular befece any action was taken. , ■—. ■
