STRUCK A CONSTABLE
INTOXICATED MAN'S ACT Charged with being found drunk in Karangahape Road on Saturday, and assaulting Constable S. T. H. Madden, a glassblower named Frederick John Pope, aged 21, pleaded guilty to both counts when he came before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. Senior-Sergeant Joyce said Constable Madden saw Pope lying in a doorway at 3.40 p.m. on Saturday. The constable put Pope on his feet and, while awaiting the arrival of a taxi, Pope struck the constable two violent blows on the side of the face before the latter could protect himself.
Mr. A. V. Fraer, who appeared for accused, said Pope was drunk and had no recollection of what happened. He had been to a party on Saturday. Counsel added that the fact that Pope had recently suffered concussion while playing football might have affected him in some wav.
