Before the estimates of the and Prisons Department were finally passed by the House of Representatives the Minister-in-Charge. Mr. Mason, made further reference to Dr. McMillan's allegation that theie had been a breach of prison routine in connection with the escape of four prisoners at the Auckland

Mr. Mason quoted from a Wellington newspaper r?port on Novenibei 2° 1910. in which it was stated that in an interview the then Minister, Dr McMillan, said that the affair had been carefully investigated by the inspector of prisons. Mr. D. A. Mackintosh, who had stated that the rustomarv routine that had heen followed for the past 20 years had been observed on the e\ening °f'he escape and that there was no lack of care and vigilance on the part of the staff. Mr. Mason said that the report could be summarised by the heading of the published account. w h>ch was "So Lack of Vigilance of Staff round."
