MERITORIOUS SERVICE

PERMANENT STAFF OFFICER

One of the best known officers in the Northern Military District, Captain J. W. Fletcher, of the New Zealand Permanent Staff, has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for long and faithful service. For the last 10 years he has been the army proof officer at the works of the Colonial Ammunition Company, Limited.

Joining the Green Howards in d9OO, Captain Fletcher later served with the Gordon Highlanders in South Africa and earned the Queen's Medal. After leaving the anny he came to New Zealand in 1912 and was appointed to the Permanent Staff. On the outbreak of war he was appointed to the 6th Hauraki Regiment as an instructor. He served in Egypt and was seriously wounded at the landing on Gallipoli. On returning to New Zealand Captain Fletcher was engaged on instructional work at Helensville, Onehunga and Whangarei. After holding the honorary rank of lieutenant since 1919 he was promoted in December, 1939, to captain and quartermaster.
