NINE TEARS IN ARMY Born in Northern Ireland 44 years ago, Private Irvine joined the army during the Great War at the age of 17, serving with the Ulster Division. During his nine years' service he was for pai't of the time in the army of occupation on ihe Rhine. Coming to New Zealand in 1925, he was employed on the railway permanent way at Mercer, Huntly and Auckland.

At the outbreak of war Private Irvine joined up again, and following three months' training at the district school at Narrow Neck he was posted to the Guards Vital Points at Ngaruawahia. Later he was transferred to the New Zealand Temporary Staff and posted to the Ngarawahia camp provost unit. He leaves a wife and two children.
